Trying to leave our little slice of America better than we found it!

My School House Nest

April 1, 2014

Let’s talk about “nesting.” Well… my experience with nesting in particular. (Source) If you’re not familiar with the terms “nesting” or “nesting instinct,” let me fill you in. It’s a time in a pregnant woman’s life* when she feels the need to compulsively organize and clean every surface that crosses her face or nose or enormously swollen uterus. Me? I was totally nesting. And apparently, dropping phrases like: “enormously swollen uterus.

Harrison's Rocker (The Reveal!)

March 28, 2014

I know I normally post on Tuesdays and Thursdays but I couldn’t wait to share this before and after! Since Harrison came a bit early, I didn’t have the rocker at the house when we brought him home from the hospital. If you’re new to the site, here’s a one-liner to catch you up: Matt and I decided to refinish an heirloom antique rocker from his Great Aunt instead of popping on an upholstered glider for the nursery.

Welcome Home, Harrison Mark!

March 26, 2014

Hey there! Sorry I’ve been MIA. The blog hasn’t seen much action lately. Why? For good reason, I promise. On St. Patrick’s Day, we welcomed our son! Harrison Mark 7 lbs, 2 oz, 20 1/4” March 17th, 2014 We’ve been a little crazy around here, as you might imagine. Matt and I are over the moon while Griff is still sniffing it out… literally. He came into the world at 3:46am and life hasn’t been the same since.

Upgrading Kitchen Cabinet Trim

March 13, 2014

Hey look! It’s a post about something other than the nursery! You’re welcome. I’m the one having this baby, and even I’m sick of the nursery posts. So let’s take a break and talk about how we neglected the trim above our kitchen cabinets for ohhhh… nine months. Matt and I (mostly Matt - I played cheerleader and tool-gatherer) made progress this weekend, but first, let’s take a little picture tour of how we got to where we were desperately needing new trim above the kitchen cabinets…

A Quick DIY Nursery Mobile (For Under $7!)

March 11, 2014

When I set out to make a mobile for the nursery, I didn’t exactly set out with any real idea of what I wanted. Sure, I checked out a few DIY options online before heading out to the store, but in the end, I found my inspiration perusing my local Michael’s Arts and Crafts store. I came home with a flat flower hoop, some all-purpose acrylic, non-toxic craft paint, and nine random wood shapes.

A Shelf With Personality Issues

March 6, 2014

Over the summer, my mother-in-law brought over a bright red shelf she had found at a cute antique shop up in Litchfield. Litchfield County sits to the North of us and it’s an absolute haven for antique lovers. (Source) She picked it up for $15 and decided that she couldn’t really use it in her home. She offered it to me, and I thought it would look nice painted a softer color, hanging in our living room or perhaps one of the bedrooms.

Weekend Recap: The Art is Hung!

March 4, 2014

Tuesday already. March already. I can’t believe it’s baby month. That’s nuts. Where did the time go? Seriously, we have less than 25 days ‘til go time. Oy. Matt and I stayed local this past weekend but kept ourselves pretty busy. I know. Shocker. We hosted Matt’s Uncle & Aunt for lunch on Saturday and spent the rest of the weekend catching up around the house, wandering Costco, walking Griff, and starting a flurry of random house projects.

2014 House Goals

February 27, 2014

Well, here we are. Not quite two full months into 2014, and I’ve finally got my loose list of 10 house goals all set. Procrastinate, much? (Image Source) After getting a good majority of the 2013 goals out of the way, we’re left with a couple of rollovers plus some new contenders. In no particular order… 1. Create a cozy nursery for Butterball. Yes, that’s what we call our little man-to-be.

A Custom Nursery Art Teaser

February 25, 2014

Yes, this post is a bit of a teaser, because I don’t have true “after” shots yet. Yet! They’re on their way… Those who know me well know that I get ridiculously excited ridiculously easily. You can see a few pictures and read a little about that here, but it’s not necessary. You just need to know that a good trip to Costco can send me over the edge. That gives you a pretty good idea, right?

Showering Me With Love

February 18, 2014

My mom and sisters (yes, they both flew in!) threw me a baby shower this weekend, and I am still taking it all in. In fact, I think I’ll be taking it in for quite some time. I’m completely overwhelmed with gratitude. I can’t believe the outpouring of support and love that surrounded me (and Matt and baby, too!) I tried to relish each moment at the time, but as it is with most events like this, sometimes the reflection period follows the event itself.
