Yes, there’s a little play on words in the title. I couldn’t help myself.
One day over the last few months, I realized that I allowed a spot of grass/dirt/long lost flowers get completely out of control. It’s a spot where our driveway meets the road and I did a little sprucing on it last spring here.
The sprucing looked okay… for a little while. Then Spring came and with it a newborn. Aaaand cue the neglect.
Yikes, I know. I went to Home Depot and grabbed 3 mums to put in corner after weeding and tearing out clumps of crab grass. Originally, I left one plant that was questionably a weed.
As it turns out, that random plant was a weed, so I tore it out and tried to plant the third mum. I kept digging and hitting pavement, so I decided nothing would grow there but weeds. I had divided the small space up in thirds in my head, and wanted one mum in each third. With the other two planted, that left a gap of garden that looked a bit awkward. I decided to make a quick “Welcome” sign out of scrap wood.
I spray painted the piece of scrap with a gray color that I had laying around.
Don’t worry, I was spray painting outside and Harrison was in the corner of the garage doing this…
Lucky. With a couple of coats of gray on the piece of scrap, I pulled out an old can of yellow exterior paint that I used to paint the back door.
I grabbed a craft brush and free-handed a little “Welcome” scribble with some random dots and a sun. It took me literally 3 minutes.
Since the wood wouldn’t stand up on it’s own, I grabbed the staple gun and a few stray pieces of wrapped wire and made makeshift legs. Can you tell this project was on a whim by my word choices? “Scribble, random, makeshift…” Ha.
I waited for it to dry before spraying the whole thing with a clear gloss coat to protect it a bit from the elements. Then, I stuck it in the ground and called it a day.
I’m happy that it served as a bit of a creative outlet while using stuff I had laying around. With the cost of the mums, this “Welcome” update - get it? ran me well under $10. Now, I just have to maintain it. ;)
